About This Program

The nation's oldest school choice program (1869). Students in Vermont towns that do not operate public schools at their grade level receive public funding to attend any public or approved independent school. Tuition rates are approximately $15,295 for K-6 and $16,752 for 7-12 (2022-23). Act 73 of 2025 added restrictions on which schools can participate. Beginning in 2028-29, all student funding will be equalized under the foundation formula regardless of school type.

How to Apply

Town tuitioning is administered at the local level. If your town does not operate a public school at your child's grade level, the town pays tuition for your child to attend another approved public or independent school. Contact your local school district or town clerk to learn about available options. Vermont's town tuitioning program is one of the oldest school choice mechanisms in the country.
