About This Program

The nation's second-oldest school choice program (1873). Students in Maine towns that do not operate public schools at their grade level receive public funding to attend any public or approved private school. Following the landmark Carson v. Makin Supreme Court ruling (2022), religious schools must be included. Tuition rates are capped at state-determined per-pupil averages, and sending towns pay directly to receiving schools.

How to Apply

Town tuitioning is administered at the local level. If your town does not operate a public school at your child's grade level, the town pays tuition for your child to attend another public school or an approved private school. Contact your local school administrative unit (SAU) or town office to learn about available options and the enrollment process.
